Cumberland City Council Urges Community to Sign Petition to Save Carnarvon Golf Course

POSTED ON September 18, 2025 @ 4:20 pm

The fight to protect Cumberland’s precious green spaces has intensified as new information reveals that Coleman Park, a beloved local sports park, is also being considered by the NSW Government for future cemetery development.

This discovery comes on the heels of the government’s highly contested proposal to convert the nearby Carnarvon Golf Course.

The Cumberland City Council expresses its outrage at this unacceptable development and has launched a new community petition to combat the expanded threat.

“Our parks are not vacant land—they are vital community assets that support health, connection, sport, and biodiversity,” said Mayor Ola Hamed. “We thank the thousands who signed the original petition and attended the rally. Your support sent a powerful message: our community values and will fight to protect its precious green spaces. Now, we must stand together again to defend both Carnarvon Golf Course and Coleman Park.”

The Council’s new petition calls on decision-makers to:

  • Immediately remove both Carnarvon Golf Course and Coleman Park from any list of potential cemetery expansion sites.
  • Honour commitments to protecting green open space and parklands, especially those near Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs).
  • Require Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP) to investigate alternative cemetery sites outside a “30-minute” drive from Sydney’s inner suburbs—especially locations where urban green space is not under threat.

Residents are urged to sign the new petition and make their voices heard. While the previous parliamentary petition has now closed, this new community-led initiative is crucial to sending a clear and unmistakable message to the government.
