Hamersley Golf Course Redevelopment Wins National Acclaim for Community Impact

POSTED ON July 4, 2025 @ 1:03 pm

Hamersley Public Golf Course has officially teed off a new era, with its recent $20 million transformation earning national recognition at the 2025 National Awards for Local Government. The City of Stirling’s ambitious redevelopment project claimed top honours in the “Productivity through Infrastructure” category, solidifying its status as a trailblazer in reimagining public recreation spaces.

Completed in late 2024, the redevelopment has revitalised the northern suburbs destination, drawing more than 265,000 visitors in just six months, more than doubling its previous annual attendance. The crown jewel of the new-look facility is a cutting-edge, two-storey driving range, equipped with radar-based ball-tracking technology, premium lounge seating, and full food-and-beverage service. It’s a dramatic shift from the traditional public course setup, ushering in an entertainment-first approach that appeals to golfers and non-golfers alike.

The project also introduced a 500-person bar and restaurant, a revamped pro shop featuring Western Australia’s first public putting simulator, and one of the largest public art installations ever commissioned by the City. Combined, these elements have redefined what a municipal golf course can be—part sports hub, part community gathering place.

The driving range alone has shattered previous usage records, with users hitting around 1 million balls per month—nearly eclipsing the former annual average of 1.25 million. It’s not just a spike in activity; it’s a sign that Hamersley has become a vibrant local landmark.

“This redevelopment has delivered more than just upgraded facilities—it’s delivered a real sense of pride and place,” said City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin. “We’ve seen locals re-engage with this space in ways that go beyond golf. It’s now a place for friends, families, and community groups to gather and connect.”

The “Productivity through Infrastructure” award acknowledges projects that harness innovation, planning, and region-specific strengths to drive economic and social growth. According to the federal judging panel, Hamersley ticked every box—leveraging technology, enhancing liveability, boosting job creation, and future-proofing infrastructure in a fast-growing region.

The 2025 National Awards for Local Government drew 192 entries from across Australia. Winners were announced on June 26 in a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra, highlighting standout projects that can inspire councils nationwide.

In addition to its win for infrastructure productivity, the City of Stirling was also recognised for excellence in community engagement and initiatives aimed at reducing violence against women and children. These accolades reflect a broader strategy from the City: delivering thoughtful, inclusive services and spaces for all residents.

Mayor Irwin praised the collaborative efforts behind the project’s success, noting the innovation and drive within the City’s workforce.

“We have some incredibly capable and creative people working across the organisation,” Irwin said. “When you combine that talent with a leadership team and Council that are willing to back bold ideas, you get results like this. It’s a proud moment for all of us.”

The redevelopment has also proven to be a powerful economic catalyst. The new hospitality offerings and expanded visitor numbers have created dozens of local jobs and injected new life into the surrounding area. Local businesses have reported increased foot traffic, while golf participation—particularly among younger players and families—has seen a noticeable boost.

Hamersley’s transformation comes at a time when local governments around the country are grappling with how to make traditional community facilities relevant to modern lifestyles. The City of Stirling’s approach—combining sport, technology, hospitality, and art—may now serve as a blueprint for others.

As more councils look to reimagine underused spaces, the Hamersley success story proves that with the right vision, public infrastructure can deliver far more than essential services—it can inspire pride, strengthen communities, and become a destination in its own right.
