PETITION: Golf New Zealand Urges Public Support to Save Pegasus Golf Club

POSTED ON June 12, 2026 @ 3:33 pm

Golf New Zealand has officially thrown its support behind a parliamentary petition aiming to protect Pegasus Golf Club, following the site’s recent sale and proposed conversion into a residential housing development.

The national body is raising concerns over the potential loss of the Canterbury course, noting that the developers intend to utilize a fast-track application process to bypass traditional development hurdles.

The Value of Golf Facilities

Golf New Zealand emphasized that golf courses serve a purpose extending far beyond the sport itself, acting as vital infrastructure for local communities.

“These are not simply venues for a round of golf, they are green spaces that bring communities together, support physical and mental wellbeing and welcome people of all ages and abilities into a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime,” the organization stated.

Concerns Over Fast-Track Redevelopment

The primary concern stems from the speed at which the course could be permanently dismantled under the proposed redevelopment strategy. Golf New Zealand warned that the ramifications of losing the Pegasus course would extend past regional boundaries.

“Reports indicate the redevelopment is likely to be pursued through a fast-track application – a process that could see a well-established course lost and with it a vital community asset, with consequences felt well beyond Canterbury,” the organization noted.

Long-Term Impact on the Sport

Highlighting the permanence of converting green spaces into housing, the sporting body stressed that established courses are nearly impossible to replace once they are demolished.

“Decisions of this kind carry weight for the entire golfing community. A course that takes decades to mature and embed itself in a community can be lost in a fraction of that time and seldom does anything comparable take its place,” Golf New Zealand stated. “For that reason, Golf New Zealand believes our existing facilities deserve genuine protection, so that those that play today and those that pick up the game of golf tomorrow have a place to do so.”

Call to Action for the Community

In response to the threat of redevelopment, Golf New Zealand is actively encouraging both local golfers and the wider public to review the current proposal and sign the official New Zealand Parliament petition.

The organization urged the public to “lend your signature in support of preserving Pegasus Golf Club and everything it contributes to golf in Canterbury and across Aotearoa.”
