SA Liberal Party’s Suggests Alternate Site for LIV Golf Course Proposal

POSTED ON September 8, 2025 @ 5:25 pm

Greg Norman, Peter Malinauskas and Scott O’Neill following their announcement that Adelaide will remain the exclusive home of LIV Golf Australia.

A new proposal from the Liberal Party to build a public golf course at Dry Creek is sparking debate, as the site has been earmarked for a major housing development. The plan, revealed by Liberal MLC Frank Pangallo, would see the government acquire land at Dry Creek instead of redeveloping the existing North Adelaide Public Golf Course.

On a recent FIVEAA radio broadcast, Pangallo stated, “There’s a greenfield site at Dry Creek that the government could take over tomorrow and build [a public golf course] very quickly…in three years you could have it done.”

The Dry Creek site is currently slated to become one of the state’s largest urban renewal projects, with plans for at least 15,000 new homes as part of the Premier’s Housing Roadmap. This has prompted questions from the Malinauskas Labor Government about the viability and cost of the Liberal Party’s alternative plan. The land in question is a mix of remediated soil and salt flats, adding to the complexity of any potential development.

The Liberal Party has yet to provide details on the project’s estimated cost or explain how it could be completed within a three-year timeframe, given the site’s environmental challenges.

Housing vs. Golf: Competing Priorities

The Malinauskas Labor Government plans to invest in the North Adelaide Public Golf Course, transforming it into a “world-class facility” within the Adelaide Park Lands. This project is positioned as a key driver for tourism and major events, citing the success of the LIV Golf tournament, which reportedly delivered an $81.46 million return to the state economy in 2025.

Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion criticized the Liberal proposal, stating, “Sacrificing the future of the Dry Creek urban renewal project for a golf course shows just how out of touch the Liberals are with the scale of the housing crisis confronting South Australians.”

He added that the idea of moving a significant event like LIV Golf to Dry Creek while also scrapping a crucial housing project is “completely irresponsible policy on the fly.”

The debate highlights a significant divide in development priorities: a major urban renewal and housing project versus a new public golf course intended to boost tourism. The Liberal Party is under pressure to provide more details on their proposal and justify sacrificing a potential solution to the state’s housing crisis for a new golf facility.
