HELP NEEDED: Canungra Golf Club at risk of losing their course

POSTED ON April 30, 2026 @ 11:16 am

The Canungra Area Golf Club is facing a turning point. We’ve recently learned that the land we call home, a place that has served this community for over 50 years, is being considered for sale as part of a Defence land divestment process.

To those in a boardroom, this might look like a line on a spreadsheet or a routine administrative decision. But to us, it is the potential loss of a legacy.

Why this place matters:

For five decades, this club has functioned as the lungs of our town. It is where:

Veterans find solace: Our deep connection with the service members from Kokoda Barracks is vital. For many, these greens are more than a course; they are a sanctuary where veterans and active personnel can unwind, decompress, and reconnect with others in a peaceful, non-military environment.

Families connect: In an age of digital isolation, this is one of the few remaining places where kids put down their devices and families spend quality time together outdoors.

Friendships are born: From the morning regulars to the weekend social players, the clubhouse is where barriers of age and background dissolve. It is a true community-run space.

Local spirit is built: Unlike commercial facilities, this club has been nurtured by the sweat and dedication of volunteers. It is a testament to what a community can build when we work together.

We are not just losing land; we are losing our identity. Once a community space like this is gone, it is gone forever. We cannot afford to let a short-sighted administrative decision erase a half-century of history and human connection.

How you can stand with us:

We are rallying the community to show decision-makers that the value of our club far exceeds the market value of the land. Your voice is our strongest asset.

If you have ever played a round, enjoyed a coffee on the deck, volunteered your time, or seen the positive impact this club has had on a friend or family member, we need to hear from you.

Please send your testimonial to: canungragolf@gmail.com

Not sure what to write?

Simply share a brief story about what the club means to you. You might include:

  • A specific memory of a time you spent here.
  • Why you (or a family member) rely on this space for physical or mental wellbeing.
  • Why you think it’s important for Canungra to keep this recreational space

Every email is a piece of evidence we can use to fight for our future. Please share this story, tag your friends, and let’s ensure that the Canungra Area Golf Club continues to serve our community for another 50 years.
