Royal Sydney Marks Historic Milestone for Women in Golf with Icon Karrie Webb AO
On Friday, 13th February, The Royal Sydney Golf Club took a significant step toward shaping the future of the sport by formally signing the R&A Women in Golf Charter. The landmark event was made even more prestigious by the presence of Australian golfing legend Karrie Webb AO, who joined Club leadership to celebrate the commitment.
The signing ceremony brought together a passionate group of members and staff to witness the pledge, led by President Lucy Regan, Women’s Captain Nicki Barrett-Lennard, and Men’s Captain Adam Cornell. Following the formal proceedings, attendees were treated to an intimate Q&A session and conversation with Webb, whose storied career remains a primary inspiration for female golfers worldwide.
A Commitment to a Balanced Community
The R&A Women in Golf Charter is a global initiative designed to increase the number of women and girls playing the game and to empower more women to pursue careers within the industry.
Royal Sydney President Lucy Regan emphasized that the signing is not just a formality, but a reflection of the Club’s core values.
“We are committed to supporting and encouraging women and girls participating and working in golf and actively promoting a balanced golfing community,” Regan said. “We are glad to join the many other clubs in Australia and internationally who have shown leadership through this public commitment to enriching the future of golf.”
Empowering the Next Generation
With women and girls currently making up more than 40% of both the membership and staff, Royal Sydney is already a leader in inclusivity. Women’s Captain Nicki Barrett-Lennard noted that the Charter solidifies a pathway for continued growth.
“This is a commitment to them—and future generations of golfing women—ensuring they have opportunities for development in both a professional and sporting capacity at Royal Sydney, as well as beyond,” said Barrett-Lennard.
Looking Ahead
By adopting the Charter, Royal Sydney joins a global movement to modernize golf culture. This initiative complements the Club’s existing efforts, such as the Australian Golf Foundation’s Junior Girls Golf Scholarship Program, which focuses on nurturing young talent.
Through these collective efforts, Royal Sydney aims to ensure that golf remains a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible sport for women and girls at every level, from the practice green to the boardroom.
