Community activities to kick off Ladies Masters week

POSTED ON January 31, 2014 @ 10:00 am

The Volvik RACV Ladies Masters will be held at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast 6-9 February, with Golf Queensland kicking off the week with a host of community engagement activities planned.

Over 500 juniors will participate in a number of golf activities around the area during the week, with ALPG, LET and PGA professional golfers also engaging with the juniors. Players already confirmed include former World No.12 Lindsey Wright, LET winner, England’s Felicity Johnson and Women’s NSW Open winner Joanna Klatten.

Golf Queensland will begin activities on Monday, visiting Gold Coast Recreation and Sport to assist special needs athletes in having a go and getting involved with golf.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see local schools William Duncan State and Merrimac State learning basic golf skills and being introduced to new and fun golf activities.

The ‘Behind the Ropes Experience’ will take place on Thursday and Friday, with Kelvin Grove State College and Robina State High School getting all-access passes at the Ladies Masters. The school students will tour the media centre, have an opportunity to talk with the stars, attend a clinic, learn about career pathways in golf and watch the players in action on-course.

A junior golf activity centre will be set up on the grassed area in front of the clubhouse over the weekend, open Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February from 10am – 2pm. There will be chipping targets, putting practice and other fun activities available, using the latest MYGolf and SNAG equipment.

Adrian Hewat, Golf Queensland’s Participation Development Manager who has coordinated the week’s activities alongside Lee Harrington, said he was looking forward to getting involved with the Gold Coast community.

“Working with the community is a rewarding experience and teaching basic golf skills is one way we can give back,” Mr Hewat said.

“Golf is a terrific sport for children to stay active while learning some core life skills and we are excited to be further promoting the sport within the Gold Coast community.

“The week isn’t just about watching golf; it’s also about getting out there and giving it a go.”
