Golfers desert club in face of $1000 levy crackdown
GOLFERS are walking away from Peregian Springs Golf Club in droves after being slapped with legals letters of demand for failing to pay $1000 membership levies imposed by a board controlled by the developer Aveo.
The board has also increased annual fees to $2800 – an increase of around $400 – and slapped a $240 annual “Trail” charge on members who use their own motorised carts.
Members’ annual fees also include a $400 bar levy.
The increase comes as some members have seen the value of membership shares drop from $25,000 to just $100.
Others who paid $9500 for their shares have also lost out.
The club, which is 75% owned by Aveo, has negotiated the $900,000 sale of golf course to the developer now subject to a Sunshine Coast Council development approval.
While members are being charged a levy of $1000, the levy on the developer is only $25,000 while social and five-day, seven-day and weekend members have escaped a charge.
While full members must pay the new trail fee five and seven day members are provided with a club maintained GPS golf cart free as part of their membership.
Shareholders only qualify for the perk unless they hand in their worthless share and leave the club for 12 months.
