The Brisbane Golf Club appoints David Mason as Course Superintendent

POSTED ON November 26, 2021 @ 8:15 pm

The Brisbane Golf Club is excited to announce the appointment of David Mason as Course Superintendent.

David, who will start in his new role on March 1 next year, has had more than 27 years’ experience in the golf course maintenance industry, including 17 years as a Course Superintendent.

The 45-year-old is currently Course Superintendent at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, a position he has held for over six years. The Metropolitan Golf Club, which sits in the celebrated Melbourne Sandbelt, is ranked No.14 in Australia, and in 2018 hosted the PGA Tour World Cup of Golf.

“Outstanding”

President of The Brisbane Golf Club, Dr Mark Deuble, said the Committee had been through an exhaustive process to select a new Course Superintendent, and has no doubt they have attracted one of the very best in Australia.

“His CV is imposing, and his experience at this level is outstanding,” he said.

“Importantly, David has installed new irrigation systems at all three golf courses at which he has worked, and we look forward to him overseeing the rectification plans following our recent irrigation installation.

“We are excited to have him joining us and we are extremely optimistic about what improvements he can make to our wonderful golf course.”

Extensive resume

Prior to joining Metropolitan, David spent 6½ years at Riversdale Golf Club (Melbourne) and 4½ years at the Warrnambool Golf Club, both as Course Superintendent. The first 10 years of his career were, ironically, also at The Metropolitan, which he re-joined as Course Superintendent in 2015.

David has also had widespread experience of major tournament preparation, including the 1993 and 1997 Australian Opens, the 2001 World Matchplay Championship and, most recently, the 2018 World Cup of Golf and 2019 President’s Cup.

Currently undergoing a Bachelor of Agriculture and Technology (Turfgrass Agronomy) at Latrobe University, Brisbane Golf Club’s new Course Superintendent has a Diploma of Turf Management as well as a Diploma of Management.

“David and his wife Tash, who are both developing golfers, are excited at the prospect of moving to Queensland. We look forward to welcoming them both to our Club, and to the wider BGC family,” Dr Deuble said.

Brisbane’s new Course Superintendent describes himself as loyal, passionate and professional, and seeks to perform all tasks ‘to the best of my ability’.

“I am highly motivated and enthusiastic, and seek to provide a professional team environment, and my expectation is to impart leadership qualities which will produce world-class surfaces on the golf course,” he said.

“I believe my passion, enthusiasm and hands-on approach, along with my knowledge within the industry and experience working at The Metropolitan Golf Club will enable me to build on the platforms that have been set by Brett Morris and Mitch Hayes.

“My goal is to lead the current team to provide a prestigious golfing environment for all Members of The Brisbane Golf Club.”
