Jason Day accepts Greg Norman Medal
World No. 2 Jason Day capped off an incredible season by taking out the inaugural Greg Norman Medal for Australia’s best-performing international golfer on Tuesday night on the Gold Coast.
The prestigious accolade is the second national award for Day, who was also given the 2015 Don Award from the Australian Sports Hall of Fame in earlier in October this year.
It has been a fantastic year for the 28-year-old Queensland golfer who won five times on the US PGA Tour this year, including his maiden major championship title at the US PGA Championship, and reaching the No.1 on the world ranking in September.
Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA and Greg Norman attended the ceremony on the gala nigh at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast and agreed that there was no one more deserving of the accolade than Day.
“On behalf of the Australian golf industry I congratulate Jason on winning the inaugural Greg Norman Medal and convey how proud we are of all his achievements this year,” Mr Thorburn said.
“Jason is a wonderful ambassador for golf and it’s fantastic to see him add the Greg Norman Medal to his list of successes.”
Day, a U.S citizen, appeared via video link whilst his mother accepted the award from Greg Norman on his behalf, as he was unable to attend the dinner ahead of this week’s Australian PGA Championships.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to win the Greg Norman Medal, it caps off an amazing year,” Day said.
“I’d like to thank the PGA of Australia for launching this medal with Greg Norman and their support over the past ten years.”
Day beat fellow nominees Adam Scott, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman, Steven Bowditch, Karrie Webb, Minjee Lee and Rebecca Artis for what the PGA of Australia hopes will become the country’s most prestigious golf award.
