The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has approved the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) based education certification for Malaysian golf club managers.

The decision of the MGA, the ruling golfing body in Malaysia, to endorse the programme is seen as a significant move that will speed up the process of improving overall management standards at the country’s more than 200 golfing establishments.

During his visit to Malaysia for the recent BMI Leadership Course at the TPC Kuala Lumpur, Jason Koenigsfeld, the CMAA’s Senior Vice President of Professional Development, held an open session on CMAA education.

In addition to BMI delegates, representatives from the MGA, the Golf Course Managers Association of Malaysia (GCMAM), Ministry of Sport and various clubs attended.

Koenigsfeld said last year the CMAA appointed the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) to execute the BMI education programme for the Asia Pacific region in partnership with existing CMAA partners in China, Hong Kong, Macau and New Zealand.

“The Malaysian Golf Association is committed to raising standards in all areas of the golf industry in the country,” said Senator Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Mohd Anwar HJ Mohd Nor, President of the MGA.

“We applaud the efforts of the CMAA and the AGIF in bringing this important educational programme to our region.

“The MGA fully supports these undertakings and encourages all those in golf club management in Malaysia to take advantage of these opportunities to learn and to broaden their experience.”

Mohd Rom Muslim, President of the GCMAM, said: “We all recognise that within our chosen industry the on-going challenges are immense, but the rewards can be substantial.

“Those rewards, however, can only be attained through excellence … and attaining excellence requires considerable training and education.”

The BMI is a professional development programme developed and launched by the CMAA in the early 1980s. Noting managers at all phases of their careers need instruction, education or inspiration, the concept of the ‘lifetime professional development programme’ was born.

The vision was realised as a multi campus-based programme that provides tangible career benchmarks by which managers can track their progress and strive for various levels of competency, including a respected certification.

The curriculum is based on 10 competency areas covering every aspect of a club manager’s job.

In the CMAA 2015 Compensation and Benefits Report, it was reported that the head of club’s compensation with CCM designation was 31% higher than a head of club’s compensation without CCM designation.

The BMI programmes are completely endorsed and empowered by CMAA and is equivalent to what one can receive in the United States.
