New Zealand PGA CEO steps down after seven years

The PGA of New Zealand has confirmed that Duncan Simpson will retire from his position as Chief Executive today April 1, and will assume a part-time role with the PGA of Association Secretary.

Duncan, who has served seven years in his role, will resume duties including member contract and employment advisory support, administration of the PGA Benevolent Trust Fund, writing certain communication pieces, and providing general assistance and support to the General Manager.

“The board of the PGA of New Zealand thanks Duncan sincerely for his seven years of commitment to the organisation and development of professional golf in this country, during which time we have seen significantly greater financial stability in the organisation, a much strengthened professional education programme, the rejuvenation of the NZPGA Championship, and a strategic vision under which the organisation is working very hard to foster a stronger ‘whole of golf’ outcome for all levels of the game in New Zealand,” PGA Chairman Tony Nowel said.

“I repeat an earlier comment that the PGA of New Zealand is now a vastly different organisation in terms of influence and contribution to the golf industry since Duncan took up the role of CEO in 2009.”

“As PGA Members and industry stakeholders are well aware, the PGA of New Zealand is continuing to pursue the conclusion of a ‘Whole of Golf’ outcome with New Zealand Golf”, Mr Nowell continued, “this would logically lead to a single CEO for a new combined organisation, and until an outcome is clear the PGA management and board will work closely together with this changed structure to provide an uninterrupted range of services to its members. We look forward to Duncan’s continued support in this transition period.”

General Manager Dominic Sainsbury will assume full responsibility for all operational functions of the PGA of New Zealand, including National Events, as General Manager reporting to the board.

“We congratulate Dominic Sainsbury for the enthusiasm, commitment and competence he has shown in assuming the responsibility of his new role as General Manager, and we have every confidence that with Dom’s leadership the operational support for our PGA NZ members remains in very good hands.”
